People often ask; "how do I write a cover letter than someone will actually read?"

There are many questions around cover letters with the big one being "does anyone actually read them?" The answer is, "yes" if you avoid these common mistakes:

  • Writing a cover letter that's too long. A few brief paragraphs is all you need.
  • Making it all about you rather than the problems you can help the company solve. If your letter contains the word "I" more than two or three times, you're probably heading down the wrong path.
  • Repeating what is on your resume. Your cover letter should motivate the reader to want to read your resume. Repeating what's already there won't do that.

In this episode we cover the elements of an effective cover letter; one that a recruiter or hiring manager will want to read.
